Being a teacher is damn hard because kids can be such rude and such a pain in the ass. That's all well and good, but this teacher might've taken things a little too far. The Narbonne High School Teacher in Harbor City, California has been placed on paid leave after the recording of her cussing out a student who'd been heckling here went viral, reports the Daily Breeze.
Interestingly enough, the argument started over the use of the term "African-American":
The teacher was leading a classroom discussion about race and ethnicity when the confrontation erupted. The teacher said she was trying to make the point that the term “African-American” is, in some respects, a misnomer.
“You’re an American first,” she said, adding that her forebears were Italian, and she doesn’t refer to herself as Italian-American.
The teacher said she does like to encourage conversation in class, but this argument with the student was the last straw after work-related stress and being in severe physical pain (she had an appendectomy shortly after the incident). She also says the student violated the school's cell policy and was urged by another teacher to make the recording available online and to the administration.
This teacher was obviously having a hard day and everyone loses their temper at times. But it's not really her place to tell a person of color that they're an American first when that's just not how things are in this country. The student gets to define her identity.
